I’ve been welding for a little over 10 years — the first five or so on Stick before I ever touched a MIG gun. I still remember the first time I struck that MIG arc. My settings were all wrong, the gas wasn’t flowing right, and I was gripping that gun like I was trying to strangle it. The bead looked like a caterpillar that’d had a rough week. I had no idea what I was looking at… and it was happening fast.
Nobody had told me any of the things that actually matter. Not the stuff from a manual — the real things. The things that would have saved me from a month of frustration and a pile of ugly test welds.
Here are the five I think about every time I watch someone pick up a welder for the first time.
1. The Sound Tells You More Than the Sight
Everyone starting out is laser-focused on watching the weld pool — they should be, anyway — but the bright light draws the eye like a moth to a flame. That makes sense — you’re trying to see what’s happening. But here’s the thing nobody tells you early enough: close your eyes for a second and just listen.
A MIG welder dialed in right sounds like bacon frying. Consistent, steady crackling. Not popping, not sputtering, not a machine gun of irregular noise. Just a smooth, even fry.
When that sound is off, something’s wrong — usually wire speed or voltage is out of balance. I started making real progress when I stopped trying to fix bad welds by looking at them and started listening to what the machine was telling me instead.
The easiest way to do this is to have someone else at the machine while you are welding, preferably a seasoned welder. They can adjust voltage or wire feed speed while you are welding. I have adjusted many machines while people are welding and you really can do it just by listening.
2. Clean Metal Is Not Optional
I spent a lot of time early on trying to weld through whatever was on the metal. Mill scale, rust, paint, oil from handling — I figured the heat would take care of it.
It doesn’t. Contaminants in the weld zone cause porosity (gas pockets trapped in the weld), poor fusion, and welds that look fine until they don’t. If you’re on a MIG or TIG machine especially, the process assumes clean metal. It’s not being picky — that’s just the chemistry.
My habit now: angle grinder with a flap disc to knock off mill scale and surface rust, then a wipe with acetone on anything that’s been handled or might have oil on it. Takes two minutes. Saves a lot of rework.
The one exception is Stick welding — it tolerates dirty and rusty metal better than the others, which is part of why it’s still the go-to for farm repair work. But even then, cleaner is always better.
I used to make some repair welds for a farmer not too far from me. He used to “prep” the metal for me to save some time. His idea of prep and mine were a little different. At times I would just try to burn through it, and more times than not it didn’t go well.

3. Fit-Up Matters More Than Your Technique
Here’s the thing about welding that took me longer to accept than it should have: a weld can only be as good as the joint it’s filling. If your fit-up is sloppy — big gaps, pieces not aligned, surfaces that don’t sit flat against each other — you’re fighting the weld from the start.
New welders tend to assume bad results are a technique problem. Sometimes they are. But a lot of the time, the issue is that the pieces weren’t set up well before the arc started.
The old saying is “a welder is only as good as their grinder,” and there’s real truth in it. Time spent fitting pieces tight, tacking them in position, and checking square before you run a bead pays off in a way that no amount of torch manipulation can compensate for.
As a pipe welder I have seen more than my fair share of poor fit-ups. In the end not only is it harder to produce a good, good-looking weld, but you really don’t save any time by not slowing down on the measuring and cutting.
4. Your Settings Are Probably Wrong (And That’s Normal)
The chart on the inside of your welder’s door is a starting point, not a destination. Actual settings depend on your specific wire, your gas mix, the actual thickness of what you’re welding, your travel speed, and a dozen other variables. No chart can nail all of that for you.
What I wish someone had told me early on: expect to dial in on scrap before you weld the real thing. Every time. Different material, different thickness, different position — run some test beads first, adjust until the sound and appearance are right, then go to work.
It feels like wasted time when you’re in a hurry to get something done. It’s not. The time you spend dialing in on scrap is cheaper than rewelding (or worse, scrapping) a part you already put time into.
For the longest time the guess-and-check method was what I used. I now have a machine that I can save programs on and it is a game changer. No more guessing. Prior to that my go-to starting spot was 18.5V and 205 IPM.

5. Slow Down
The instinct when welding is to move. The weld pool looks like it’s piling up, it’s getting hot, something feels like it’s going wrong — so you speed up to get it done.
Almost always, the right answer is to slow down.
Travel speed that’s too fast produces a narrow, tall bead that sits on top of the metal instead of fusing into it. It looks like you laid a rope on the surface. The weld may hold, but the fusion is questionable. Slow down, let the pool develop, let the heat do its job.
The exception is burning through thin material — if you’re going through the metal, you need to move faster (or turn down the heat). But for most beginners on most material, the problem is moving too fast, not too slow.
I still catch myself rushing when I’m working on a deadline or when the job is awkward. It’s something you have to consciously manage. Set yourself up right, get comfortable, and move at the pace the puddle needs — not the pace your brain wants.
At times you are going to be very uncomfortable if welding in position. The worst is when the only metal you have to steady your off arm is a few degrees cooler than the sun. In those times, you are going to want to speed up to get it over with as soon as possible — you will need to just get used to getting burns.
One More Thing
None of these are secrets. They’re things you’ll figure out eventually on your own. But eventually takes longer than it needs to when you’re burning wire and getting frustrated without knowing what to adjust.
The learning curve in welding is real — but it’s a lot shorter when you know what to pay attention to. Listen to the machine. Prep your metal. Fit your joints tight. Dial in on scrap. Slow down.
Do those five things and you’ll be miles ahead of where I was at the same point.
