Do I need a certification to weld on my own farm or at home?
No — certification is only required for specific professional jobs (structural, pipeline, pressure vessel work, etc.) where an employer, inspector, or code requires it. For farm repairs, trailers, gates, and shop projects, you don't need a card, you need a solid weld. What's the real difference between MIG, TIG, and Stick welding?
Stick (SMAW) is the most forgiving in wind, rust, and dirty metal — best for farm and outdoor repair. MIG is faster and cleaner for shop work on clean, thin-to-medium steel. Can I weld on a standard household outlet, or do I need 220V?
Most inexpensive 120V machines can handle up to about 1/8" mild steel, which covers a lot of light farm and DIY repair. Anything thicker — trailer frames, implement repair, structural work — really needs a 220V machine to get proper penetration. See our farm welder guide before buying.
Can you weld galvanized steel safely?
Yes, but only with the right precautions — burning off the zinc coating first and welding in a ventilated area (or outdoors) is non-negotiable. The fumes are genuinely hazardous, not just an inconvenience. Full steps in our galvanized steel guide.
Why does my weld keep cracking or breaking?
Most of the time it's one of three things: not enough penetration (moving too fast), welding over rust, paint, or oil instead of clean metal, or the wrong amperage for the material thickness. Full diagnostic breakdown in our guide on why welds break.
How much does it cost to get set up welding at home?

What safety gear do I actually need to start?

Can a beginner learn to weld in a weekend?
You can lay a passable bead on flat mild steel in an afternoon of focused practice. Getting welds that are consistently strong, clean, and reliable on real projects takes longer — plan on weeks of practice, not hours, before trusting a weld on something load-bearing.
How thick of metal can I weld with a basic welder?
Depends on the machine and process, but as a rule of thumb: a 120V unit handles up to about 1/8", a 180–200A 240V machine handles up to 1/4"–5/16", and heavier structural or farm equipment work (3/8"+) usually needs a 200A+ machine and multiple passes.
Do I need shielding gas for MIG welding outdoors, or on a windy farm?
Traditional MIG needs shielding gas, and wind (even light) blows the gas away, causing weak, porous welds — that's why flux-core wire (no gas needed) is the better outdoor choice on a farm. Full explanation in our shielding gas guide.
What's the difference between flux-core wire and solid MIG wire?
Flux-core carries its own shielding agent inside the wire, so it works outdoors and on dirtier metal without a gas tank — trading some cleanliness and spatter for practicality. How do I know if my weld is actually strong enough to trust?
For non-critical projects (gates, brackets, general repair), a clean, consistent bead with no gaps or big holes is a good sign. For anything load-bearing or safety-critical — trailer hitches, structural supports — get someone experienced to look at it, or read our guide on diagnosing weak welds before you trust it under load.
