There’s a version of the home welding shop that shows up in magazines — the spotless garage with the powder-coated welding table, the matching tool cabinets, the pegboard wall with every tool hung in its place, and roughly $30,000 worth of equipment arranged just so. That’s a nice shop. It’s also not where anyone starts.

In contrast, a real starting shop is a cleared corner of a two-car garage, a welder on a cart, an angle grinder, some scrap steel on the floor, and enough ventilation to keep the fumes moving. That’s it. You can build world-class skills in a space like that, and most of the people who have those magazine shops started in something a lot closer to the second description.

This guide is about getting to that real starting point efficiently — what you actually need, what order to buy it in, what to spend money on versus what to save on, and how to set up the space so it’s safe and usable from day one.

Pro Tip: Before you buy a single piece of equipment, figure out your power situation. A 220V welder in a garage with no 220V circuit is a paperweight. Knowing what circuits you have — and what you’re willing to add — shapes every other decision.

Step 1: Sort Out Your Power

This is the most important thing to figure out first, and most people think about it last.

Generally, standard household outlets are 110V/120V. Most garages have at least a few of these. For a 110V MIG welder, a standard outlet is all you need — plug in and start welding. For a 220V/240V welder (most Stick machines and larger MIG machines), you need a dedicated 220V circuit with the right outlet type.

If your garage doesn’t have a 220V circuit and you want to run a 220V machine, you have two options: hire an electrician to run one (typically $200–$500 depending on your panel situation and the run length), or buy a dual-voltage machine that runs on 110V. Dual-voltage inverter machines are a real option and worth considering if adding a circuit isn’t practical right now.

One more thing: whatever circuit your welder is on, make sure it’s dedicated — meaning no other major appliances sharing it. Running a welder on a shared circuit with a refrigerator or air compressor is a recipe for tripped breakers at the worst possible moment.

Step 2: The Welder

Everything else in your shop supports the welder. So the welder is the first real purchase.

Generally, for most home shop beginners, the recommendation is a 110V MIG welder in the $700–$800 range — something like the Hobart Handler 140. It plugs into a standard outlet, handles mild steel from 24 gauge up to 1/4″, and has the wire feed stability to make learning actually enjoyable. If you know you’ll regularly be welding thicker material or working outdoors, a dual-voltage stick welder is worth serious consideration.

What not to do: Don’t cheap out on the welder and spend big on accessories. The welder is the one piece of equipment where quality directly affects your results and your learning. A smooth, stable arc on a quality machine teaches you things a sputtering, inconsistent arc on a budget import never will.

Fun Fact: The average home shop welder runs their machine for about 2–4 hours per session. At that usage level, a well-maintained 110V MIG welder will last 10–20 years without major repairs. Buy once, buy right.

Step 3: Welding Table

A welding table is where your work lives. You can weld off the floor, off sawhorses, off whatever flat surface is available — but a proper welding table makes everything easier, faster, and safer.

Notably, the most important feature of a welding table is that it’s metal. Wood and plastic surfaces don’t survive spatter and heat. Steel is the standard — either solid plate or a steel frame with expanded metal or plate top.

Build it or buy it? If you already have some basic metalworking capability, a simple welding table is a classic first project — 2″ square tubing for the legs and frame, 3/16″ or 1/4″ steel plate for the top, casters optional. A 2′ x 3′ table with a solid plate top runs about $200–$350 in materials and gives you something that’ll last decades.

If you’re buying: A simple standalone steel welding table — no fixturing features — can be found for $150–$300, and that’s all most beginners need. Strong Hand’s Nomad Economy table is a popular portable option around $300. Be aware that true fixture tables from premium brands are a different category entirely: Strong Hand’s BuildPro fixture tables run $2,400 and up, and Fireball Tool’s start around $5,100 and climb past $13,000. Those are professional production tools — overkill for a starter shop. At minimum, get something with a steel top that’s level and stable.

Step 4: Angle Grinder — Non-Negotiable

If there’s one accessory that every welder uses every single session, it’s the angle grinder. You use it before welding (cleaning rust, scale, and paint off your base metal), during welding (cleaning between passes on multi-pass welds), and after welding (grinding flush, cleaning spatter, finishing surfaces).

Typically, a 4.5″ angle grinder is the standard size for welding shop use. It handles everything from grinding wheels to flap discs to cut-off wheels. Buy a corded model from a reputable brand — Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee, Bosch. Cordless is convenient but battery life matters when you’re grinding heavy.

Discs to stock: Grinding wheels (for heavy material removal), flap discs in 40 and 80 grit (most versatile — use these most), cut-off wheels (thin — for cutting stock to length), and wire cup brushes (for cleaning and descaling). Buy a variety pack to start and see what you reach for most.

Step 5: Personal Protective Equipment

This is not optional, and it’s not where you cut corners. Welding without proper PPE is genuinely dangerous — arc flash, UV radiation, spatter burns, fume inhalation, and fire are all real hazards that proper equipment eliminates or controls.

Here’s what you need before you strike your first arc:

  • Auto-darkening welding helmet — shade 9–11 for MIG, 10–11 for Stick. Don’t buy a passive (flip-up) helmet — the auto-darkening feature isn’t a luxury, it’s the difference between being able to accurately position your torch before the arc starts and working blind. Budget $100–$200 for a solid mid-range auto-darkening helmet — something like the Lincoln Viking 1740. Premium hoods like the Lincoln Viking 3350 run around $300–$350.
  • Welding gloves — MIG-specific gloves for MIG work, heavier gauntlet gloves for Stick. They’re different products for different heat levels. Buy one pair appropriate to your process.
  • Welding jacket or leather sleeves — Spatter burns are cumulative. A cotton shirt doesn’t cut it. A leather welding jacket or at minimum leather sleeves protect your arms from arc radiation and spatter. Flame-resistant cotton (FR cotton) jackets are also good.
  • Safety glasses — For grinding. Always wear safety glasses under your helmet or when grinding without the helmet on. Grinder debris is a different hazard than arc flash.
  • Work boots — Closed toe, ideally leather. Spatter bounces and rolls. Sneakers are a burn waiting to happen.

Step 6: Ventilation

Of course, welding fumes are hazardous. The flux, zinc coatings, paint, and base metal all produce fumes when heated, and breathing them repeatedly causes real long-term health problems. This is especially true for galvanized steel (zinc fumes — see our separate guide on that) and any coated or painted metal.

For a garage shop, the baseline is: keep a door or window open and position your work so the fume plume rises away from your face. A fan moving air across the work area (not blowing directly at the weld — that disrupts shielding gas) improves things significantly.

For anyone planning to weld regularly in an enclosed space, a dedicated welding fume extractor is worth the investment. These are low-velocity, high-volume fans with filtration designed specifically for welding environments. Entry-level extractors realistically start around $1,500–$2,000 for a portable filtered unit — a real investment, but vastly more effective than a box fan in a window. Cheaper nozzle-style units exist, while mobile extractors with a filtered arm climb well past $2,000.

At minimum, never weld in a fully enclosed space with no air movement. That’s not a safety precaution — it’s a hard stop.

Step 7: Fire Safety

Ultimately, welding produces sparks and spatter that travel farther than you expect and stay hot longer than seems reasonable. A spark landing on a cardboard box fifteen feet away can smolder for an hour before igniting. This is not theoretical.

The basics for a welding shop:

  • Fire extinguisher — A 10-pound ABC dry chemical extinguisher, mounted where you can reach it fast. Check the gauge monthly.
  • Keep combustibles out of the welding area — No cardboard, no paper, no solvent rags, no gas cans. Clear a 10-foot radius of anything that burns.
  • Metal trash can with a lid — For hot slag, spatter, and electrode stubs. Never throw them in a plastic trash bin.
  • Stay after you’re done — Walk the shop 30 minutes after welding and check for anything smoldering. The delayed ignition is the one that catches people off guard.

Pro Tip: Buy your shielding gas cylinder outright rather than renting one if your local welding supply shop offers the option. You’ll pay more upfront — typically $280–$350 to buy an 80 cu ft cylinder full — but you own it permanently and refills run only about $115. Over a few years of regular welding, cylinder ownership saves real money over rental fees.

What to Skip (At First)

Here’s what you don’t need on day one, regardless of what YouTube says:

  • Plasma cutter — Useful, but not essential. Learn to cut with a grinder and a cutoff wheel first. Add a plasma cutter when your projects demand it.
  • TIG welder — A later chapter. Get competent on MIG first.
  • Fixture table with clamping system — Nice eventually, overkill to start. A flat steel surface does 90% of what a $2,500-plus fixture table does for a beginner.
  • Welding positioner — Same story. Not where the money goes early.
  • A cart for every tool — One solid welding cart for the welder and gas cylinder is all you need. Organize as you go.

The Bottom Line

Ultimately, a functional home welding shop doesn’t require a remodel or a second mortgage. What it requires is a cleared space, working power, the right welder for your process, and the safety gear to use it properly.

Start with that list above, get your first machine running, and start burning wire. The shop grows naturally from there — you’ll figure out what you actually need by running into the gaps. Every welder does.
