Why Gloves Are Different by Process
Generally, MIG and Stick welding produce a lot of spatter — molten metal droplets that fly from the arc. MIG gloves are heavy leather designed to deflect and resist these droplets. They’re bulkier because the protection needs to be there. The gauntlet cuff (the extended wrist coverage) is standard because spatter falls down and lands on your wrists and forearms.
However, TIG welding produces almost no spatter. The arc is precise and the filler rod is fed manually into the pool.
